Abstract:

Recent evidence suggests that violent victimization in adolescence contributes to problem drinking behaviors including binge drinking and negative drinking consequences (Kaukinen, 2002). Drawing on general strain theory (Agnew, 1992), problem drinking behaviors may represent a strategy for coping with severe strain, particularly in the presence of inwardly directed negative emotionality such as depression. From social learning theory (Akers, 1998), choosing drinking as a coping strategy is more likely with the support of peers who also choose this behavior. In this paper, I examine the impact of violent victimization in adolescence on a range of drinking related outcomes (participation, frequency, binge drinking) considering the mediating impact of depressive symptoms and peer drinking using two waves of the Add Health data. |
