Abstract:

Sexual assault within correctional facilities has become an area of concern for correctional officials. In 2002, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) instituted the Safe Prisons Program aimed at the prevention and limitation of inmate-on-inmate sexual assaults, physical assaults and extortion. In 2003, the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PLRA) mandated that individual States and the Federal government begin to collect information regarding the nature and occurrence of sexual assaults within their respective penal institutions. This research examines related issues within female prisons in Texas. Specifically, this research examines data related to female prisoner safety, sexual assault, inappropriate relationships and rape myths collected through self-report data from 400 randomly selected female inmates. Implications for correctional policy are discussed.
