Abstract:

Researchers and justice professionals recently began to critically examine the gendered nature of crime and deviance. Much research shows that girls encounter the criminal justice system through different paths- such as activities related to running away, sexuality, and incorrigibility. The combination of gender socialization and gendered social control results in different experiences for boys and girls. It also requires more sensitivity to traditional theoretical explanations for crime and deviance. Our approach employs a grounded theory perspective which allows us to develop more nuanced models of offending. We are collecting oral histories from women at Mobile County Metro Jail. During analysis, we read interviews multiple times for key phrases and repeated themes. Each interview is coded and as we find similarities among interviews we group them together, read them again for key points, and refine the theory being generated.
Preliminary data collection shows several key themes emerging. First, abuse of all forms is common among our sample of women. Second, drug/alcohol use is common and often the source of contact with the justice system. We note an interaction between early abuse and later problems with drugs/alcohol. Third, although some women do report law-breaking done with others, most women we have interviewed so far became involved with the justice system through solitary activities. Our findings show the importance of assuming a life course perspective in general, and specifically the need to study gendered experiences with crime and the justice system.
