Social learning theory, as articulated by Akers, and Gottfredson and Hirschi’s Self-control theory specify rather different paths to delinquency. Past studies of either theory have tended to explore their respective causal modeling in rather static, cross-sectional contexts. For both theories, few longitudinal tests exist, and fewer still explore both theories using the same subjects. The current paper represents just such a test. Using data collected during the National Evaluation of the Gang Resistance and Education Training program, we use hierarchical linear modeling to estimate the conditional influence of SLT and SCT variables on delinquency trends in a sample of youth. We accomplish this by creating a series of HLM models each of which includes two of four variables derived from SLT and SCT. Through this analytic strategy we estimate several permutations of the model using the various combinations of the time-varying covariates and make comparisons across the parameter estimates. The paper includes the implications of our findings for social learning and self-control theories, both in terms of their theoretical insights into delinquency and for their policy implications. |
