Hispanic Juveniles in the Justice System: Exploring the Impact of Cultural Capital

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Get this Document | Similar Titles

Abstract:

In the State of Texas, estimates show that forty percent of all juveniles that are adjudicated on criminal charges are Hispanic. This paper explores the differential experiences of Hispanic families in their dealings with the juvenile justice system. Different cultural capital not recognized as valid by the juvenile justice system creates conflict and often negative outcomes for Hispanic youth. The unique convergence of language barriers, culture, and social class may be contributing to the relatively high proportion of Hispanic youth in the Texas juvenile justice systems. The implications for future research are discussed.
