Abstract:

With the development of the Internet, the modality of accessing
pornography has changed and expanded. Individuals, regardless of legal age
limits, are able to access thousands of websites containing a variety of
pornographic content. Unlike traditional outlets for sexually explicit
materials, Internet users run the risk of accidental exposure to pornography
via e-mail Spam, errors in typing URLs and key word searches that retrieve
expected and unexpected results. Although there are numerous software
programs which offer parental controls in order to moderate content for
children's viewing, children may still be inadvertently exposed to
pornography and subsequently seek out this material. Using psychological
and social psychological approaches, this elucidates the phenomena of
children's inadvertent exposure to sexually explicit material on the
Internet and its consequences. In particular, the case study method will be
used to examine children who, in the absence of past sexualized behaviors, engaged
in sexual offending and exhibited symptoms of sexual addiction after
unintended exposure to pornographic materials on the web.
