The "Family Collaboration Portfolio Project" is an interactive simulation exercise in which pre-service teachers become parents of a virtual child with special needs and report transformation in parent collaboration.

Section I. A. Statement of the Issue: For the past five years I have been teaching a graduate level education course entitled Counseling Collaboration and Consultation. The first year I taught the course I was both surprised and troubled by the unfavorable at times even hostile attitudes many of my students held toward parents of children with special needs. They felt that these parents “wanted teachers to ‘fix’ their child” and were ready to “drag teachers off to court”
