Publication Type: Individual Paper Abstract: The Black Panther Party arguably stood in a class of their own when it came to trying to rid sexism from their ranks. During the formative years of the Black Power and Women’s Liberation Movements, the Panthers consciously sought to redefine manhood and womanhood through their revolutionary activities. This paper examines the writings of Huey Newton, articles in The Black Panther, and the Panthers’ Black Revolutionary Poetry and Revolutionary Art to explore gender in the Black Panther Party and the Party’s attempts to define it on their own terms as well as government attempts to use gender to suppress Panther activities. |
