Late night television talk shows are increasingly recognized as contributors to the political arena. This content analysis focuses on episodes of the four most popular late night programs: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Jokes are coded for subject, theme, and valence in order to examine what jokes are being told, who they are targeting, and the positive or negative weight they carry. |

| hosts continually use to frame their jokes. While a good first step much more research must be done on the political impact of late night comedy. A larger sample of episodes should be examined particularly to account for the dearth of jokes told by Letterman and O'Brien. A textual analysis of jokes would also be beneficial to examine more closely the language used. Finally a comparative analysis of themes and language used in late night comedy monologues and comedy |
