Abstract:

Committee assignments are central to the ability of House members to pursue their multiple goals of reelection, good policy, and legislative influence. Congressional scholars have thus focused much attention on the committee assignments of House members. Few studies, however, have focused on the committee assignments of African American members of Congress. Previous studies have concluded that African American members have been assimilated into the institution, behaving much like their white colleagues and pursing similar committee assignments.
