Abstract:

In the fall of 2002 we responded to a university wide request by our home institution for proposals to develop a learning community involving two basic studies classes and an integrative freshman seminar. While learning communities are well established at many institutions this would be UNCWs first such effort and we saw this as an exciting opportunity to work together and offer students a new perspective on our respective disciplines. We responded to the request with a proposal--Talking Heads: Politics and Public Speaking and proposed to thematically link a section of American Government with a section of Public Speaking. The basic idea was to emphasize the public speaking and rhetoric of politics across our classes with a small cohort of students who would learn and live together. We have just finished the planning and teaching of our community and this is our story.
