Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Review Method: Peer Reviewed Abstract: This paper deals with the complex mission of cinema as a social institution to forward a particular cultural identity in a postcolonial national society, that is in Bangladesh, within today's globalized world politics. I demonstrate that here the concepts of globalization and the middle classes leading the state brought forward different roles and perceptions of and around 'cinema' during the 1990s. Especially the 'national' cinema of Bangladesh took more and more 'globalized' look and attempted normalizing the 'western' modernity as the preferred version of national modernity for Bangladeshis. Before that, in 1970s-80s Bangladesh a cultural-nation modernity propagated by the nationalist middle classes has acted as the driving force for the establishment and development of cinema institutions and narrative forms of film texts. In the recent years the 'Bangladesh' nation-state as well as the middle classes faced unprecedented commercialization and urbanization. In this period, I argue that the cultural-nationalist middle classes attempted to articulate cinema as a worthy part of the 'national' modernity. At the same time the commercializing forces attempting to globalize Bangladesh, such as the state and the capitalists made this cinema to be a site of contesting identities, especially importing the notions of a globalized world and the western modernity as a universal factor. By looking at the transformations in the film industry and the cinematic texts in the 1990s Bangladesh I demonstrate the role and relationship of cinema with(in) the larger social and political context of a rapidly globalizing postcolonial society.
