Beyond the American Century: The News Media and the Dynamics of Global Power Shifts

Abstract:

In the post-Cold War, post-9/11 world, new alignments and new issues will dominate international relations, and the news media have a responsibility to present them coherently and comprehensively to the public. Political and economic globalization render obsolete much of the conventional wisdom that long guided policy makers and news organizations. There is a tendency for the news media to lapse into simplistic formulations about matters such as a clash of civilizations and otherwise foster an intellectual isolationism that is increasingly out of place in the global society. This paper analyzes coverage, primarily by American news organizations, of global political, economic, and cultural change, with particular emphasis on presenting ways this coverage might be improved.
