Abstract:

This paper assesses several constructs for analyzing religion in modern world politics, including the notion of the construction of the category of religion by the west (Asad), the mutual conditioning of religion with economic and political practice (Weber), the idea of public sphere debate over the "common good" (Habermas, as updated by Salvatore and LeVine), and the notion of "popular casuistry" (Lynch, updated from Jonsen and Toulmin).
