Abstract:
|
This presentation will examine selected ethical ideals associated with the good life and good government whose impact is evident in day-to-day international relations. The ideals will be illustrated using contrasting passages from canonical texts in the Hindu, Confuscian, and Buddhist literature. The ideals cluster in two broad areas: 1.) descriptions of the nature of persons, human existence/the good life with its painful corollary, suffering and 2.) descriptions of a well-organized government with its painful corollary, war. This material is then applied to an active learning module based on the presentation of plays in the international relations classroom, which highlight key aspects of international relations such as war and peace. The key benefit of this approach is its ability to help students develop empathy for others by walking in their shoes, speaking their lines, and acting out their decisions. |
