Abstract:

I propose a presentation that demonstrates both the strategies for program assessment that we developed in our political science department and the steps I took in leading the process. The process began in the fall of 2003; we currently are in the first stage of implementing our assessment plan.

I am an associate professor and chair of the department of political science at Capital University. In the fall of 2003 we began to design a plan for program assessment. Critical to this process was our use of Millikin University’s plan for assessment. A member of our department who had attended an assessment panel at the 2003 APSA meetings brought this model to our attention. (Brian Posler, "The Web-Based Plan of Study: Advising Technology with the Personal Touch" paper presented at the 2003 American Political Science Association Annual Meeting, Philadelphia, PA). We worked assiduously during the fall of 2003 and the spring of 2004 adapting the plan to our program as well as making the adjustments and revisions called for by our university assessment initiative.

In my presentation I will describe the process the committee followed in adapting the ___ plan. I will focus particularly on how I led this process. This presentation should add to the knowledge on assessment that our discipline has developed. Members of the audience will gain concrete ideas for the design and execution of a successful assessment plan.

I am submitting this as a solo presentation but two or three of my colleagues would be happy to join me on a panel.
