1 Making Marriage Visible: Wedding Anniversaries as the Public Component of Private Relationships Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz Professor of Communication University of Wisconsin-Parkside Kenosha WI 53141-2000 wendy.leeds-hurwitz@uwp.edu ABSTRACT Personal narratives have most often been studied as they occur in conversations. Here narratives told at a family ritual specifically a wedding anniversary are the focus of attention. The main argument is that it is through the telling of narratives of personal experience that a private relationship such as a marriage is made
poet. Interesting as they are and despite occasional brilliant analysis of what might be termed idiosyncratic rituals (e.g. Myerhoff 1992) they reveal less about social norms than more traditional forms. 3 These conclusions are based on interview data rather than my own assumptions. 4 There is a strong connection between Gumperz’ concept of contextualization cues and Bateson’s concept of metacommunication (1972) as well as Goffman’s concept of frame analysis (1974) but this is not the place to explore it.
