Abstract:
|
This paper presents the results of an analysis of the relationship between market and station characteristics and the provision of local and national news programming on local broadcast television stations. Among the findings of the study are that there is no significant relationship between a number of station ownership characteristics (local ownership, duopoly ownership, ownership group size, and Big Four network ownership) and the provision of local news programs, but there is a significant relationship between duopoly ownership and the provision of national news programming. The results suggest that ownership regulations (whether it be relaxing or strengthening of such regulations) may not bear any meaningful relationship to broadcast station’s provision of local news programming. |
