Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: The paper traces the historical trajectory of Chile's legal complex in its relationship to processes of state-formation and the introduction of political liberalism. After briefly characterizing the structure and dynamic of the legal complex throughout Chile's history (stressing the peculiar way in which lawyers in particular contributed to the configuration of a highly institutionalized and competititive political party system and to highly legalisltic state-apparatus), it then analyzes the virtues and vices of the particular articulation between the legal complex and political liberalism in this country, in light of the democratic breakdown of 1973, the authoritarian regime that followed, and the transition to democracy which started in 1990.
