Abstract:
|
The human dimensions of carbon dioxide emissions garner considerable attention in macrosociology. However, cross-national analyses generally neglect other greenhouse gases that contribute significantly to climate change and global warming. The current study addresses this paucity through the testing of models for the social structural causes of the second largest anthropogenic contributor to global warming: methane emissions intensity. The analyses consider the effects of particular economic activities, including the production of beef, rice and other cereals, as well as the production and use of oil, natural gas, and biomass energy. The impacts of economic development, urbanization, sector-level foreign investment, domestic investment, state environmentalism, and democratization are also examined. Results suggest that the structural causes of methane emissions intensity are multiple and complex, illustrating the necessity for social scientists to take more nuanced approaches when studying human-caused global environmental degradation. |
