Abstract:

This study tests models based on economic moderization, female status, state strength, dependency, child status and political modernization. The study employs the techniques of general OLS regression as well as interaction over the variable of GDP per capita using a sample of 209 countries. The study finds support for the theories of female status, child status and political modernization. The indicators female industrial employment, contraception, political rights and civil rights have a beneficial effect on child mortality rates while child labor has an adverse effect.
