Abstract:

This paper explores the distinctive character, rhetoric and politics of the cultural authority of intellectuals (educators, in particular) in the late Soviet period. On the basis of my original historical and social ethnographic research conducted in the University of Tartu, Estonia, I trace discursive and practical strategies used by local educators in effort to participate in the Soviet educational project not as mere executives but as active agents and partners. I find that the discourse and politics of “the defense of culture” and “anti-politics” were dominant components of these strategies. Instead of dismissing these strategies as “conservative” and “nationalistic,” I compare them to the “counter-cultural” strategies used by the Western “1960s generation” intellectuals. I argue that both share anti-authoritarian and anti-commercial sentiments, while sharp differences between them reflect the differences in the social situation of the Western and Soviet intelligentsias, as well as in their distinctive visions of the place of culture and education in society.
