Abstract:
|
We examine the effects of schools and families -- and specifically the social ties and socialization experiences existing within these -- on delinquent behaviors among adolescents. We also examine the effects of delinquency at one time on the quailty of the social bond with schools and families at a later time. We take as a starting point the social control theories articulated by Hirschi (1969) which subsequently have been refined and examined by others. Although three decades of research have conceptualized and measured social control within the family in great detail, considerably less attention has been paid to social control within schools. We use recent, nationally representative longitudinal data from the NLSY97 as we focus on attachment and involvement as two key aspects of social control. |
