Abstract:

Research has generated mixed findings regarding the role of religion in fathers’ involvement with their children. Some previous research has found that fathers who attend church frequently are less involved with their children; other evidence has found the opposite. These conflicting results have not been adequately explained in the literature. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study conducted by the Bendheim-Thoman Center for Research on Child Wellbeing at Princeton University, I examine the effects of religious participation and religious affiliation on unwed fathers’ involvement at baseline (i.e., immediately following the child’s birth) and one-year follow-up (i.e., when the child is 12 months old). Catholic fathers participate in fathering activities more frequently than conservative Protestant fathers, mainline Protestant fathers, fathers with other religious affiliations, and fathers with no religious affiliation. Among fathers not living with the child’s mother, frequent religious participation is associated with low psychological centrality of the father role, although psychological centrality of the father role has no significant effects on paternal involvement. Findings suggest that living arrangement, rather than marital status, is a primary determinant of participation in fathering activities and financial support.
