Abstract:

With the importance of social network and social capital for social achievement, the differentiation in accessing social capital has been becoming a critical issue for research in social network and stratification. Prior research focused mostly on individual level determinants such as family background, personal characterstics, and achieved status, to explain social capital inequality. My study extends this line of reaserch by taking macro structural factors into account for the differentiated access to socia capital. Specifically, I exmine how local socio-economic development conditions in different areas determine the opportunity structure of social contacts for the residents in those areas.
Using the position generator measurements of accessible social capital, the OLS analyses based on a 1998 survey data in 18 Chinese cities show that the economic and educational development of a city and the position of the city in Chinese power hierarchy play critical roles in shaping individuals’ opportunies for social interactions and contacts. People who live in more developed cities access better social capital. Moreover, the constraints of local development are modetrated by individuals’ability in geographic mobility. Those who have more opportunies for geographic mobility are less constrained by local structral conditions in accessing social capital.
