Abstract:

In this paper, I explore Nancy Chodorow’s theorizing about individual subjectivity and personal meaning in The Power of Feelings, with particular attention to the tensions between psychoanalytic theory and anthropological and other social science theorizing. I briefly describe the shifting historical relations between these theories within academic social science in the context of the 1960s, with the rise of New Left social movements, especially Marxist and feminist movements, as well as post-structuralism. I then reflect on some of the implications of Chodorow’s ideas for theorizing about larger scale “social change” and social movements, especially social movement scholars’ on-going difficulties in incorporating both “rational” and “emotional” factors in their conceptualizations and explanations. In so doing, I revisit Doug McAdam’s influential critique of the “classical model” of social movements and his articulation of an alternative “political process model.” I consider his political process model in light of critiques by contemporary social movement theorists interested in emotions. Finally, I discuss the difficulties of integrating psychoanalytic theory into contemporary social movement theorizing, as well as the challenges of bringing together academic theorizing about social change with socially (and individually) relevant, meaningful and helpful practices.
