Abstract:
|
In recent years, young women have begun creating both websites and community online. This is an important development in the use of technology by women, mitigated only by their choice of topic- a positive view of anorexia. The philosophy of these “Pro-Ana” websites is that anorexia is a lifestyle these women have intentionally undertaken. Through both quantitative and qualitative analysis, we explore how young women share influential rhetoric, “trigger” images, and dieting tips, and thereby reconceptualize their experience of anorexia. This social practice is examined in a structure and agency framework, examining how the pro-ana website creators enact agency and challenge the cultural structures of both the hegemonic ideal of beauty and the position of the medical establishment as sole authority of knowledge about anorexia. |
