Abstract:
|
Recent research on social movements often highlights the multiple ways in which ideology and culture interact within the context of social movements, in an attempt to pull together both individual- and structural-level variables. The central task of this study is the search for cultural factors that maintain volunteer participation in the a specific social movement organization. To explore this, I interviewed members of a local Independent Media Center, part of a global network of organizations (Global Indymedia) that emerged in response to the so-called anti-globalization protests of the late twentieth century. I found three levels of interdependent factors that affect participation in a social movement organization: individual, organizational, and cultural. This study provides a starting point for a larger study of activism in the Southern region of the United States. |
