Abstract:
|
A significant amount of the promising labor movement activity is occurring outside the traditional unions and collective bargaining framework. Through an in-depth examination of the Garment Worker Center in Los Angeles this paper explores the potential of one type of alternative labor movement organization and assesses the role it might play in revitalizing the US labor movement. Based on data gathered from participant observation and interviews with staff and workers I conclude that the Center’s efforts to build community, raise political consciousness and address the immediate material needs of workers, represents a long-term movement-building strategy that may be an appropriate orientation for labor as it shifts to a social movement footing. |
