Abstract:

This paper is an exploration into the construction of Arab identity in the Darfur region of the Sudan and how this construction leads to ethnic conflict. I will be looking at the historical boundaries between "Arabs" and "non-Arabs" in the Sudan. The boundaries between groups are formed by various processes, and in this paper I will illuminate some of those processes in relation to Darfur. In this paper I will hope to show that this ethnic identification is being mobilized by the government in the purpose of pushing a radical social agenda.
