Publication Type: Poster Abstract: The integration of social control and social learning theories has been rather controversial. From Hirschi’s perspective, the two theoretical approaches are incompatible and must remain separate, while from Akers’ perspective, the two approaches have much in common and are therefore amenable to integration. We take Akers’ approach and apply an integrated social control-social learning theoretical model to the explanation of gang membership and delinquent behavior. Using data from the National Evaluation of G.R.E.A.T. cross-sectional survey of 5,935 middle school students, we examine the extent to which social bonding influences on gang and delinquency involvement are mediated by social learning variables. |
