Abstract:

Personal religiosity has been identified as a protective factor against juvenile delinquency. What is less known is how religious context of parenting affects delinquent behavior. This study fills this gap in delinquency research by providing insight into how the religious context of parenting operates as a form of informal social control inhibiting delinquent activities. The goal of this research is twofold. First, it investigates how religious context of parenting affects family processes, including interparental conflict, parent-child relationship and parenting practices. Second, it examines how these family process variables mediate the relationship between religious context of parenting and delinquency. Using data collected in the NLSY97 surveys, a structural equation model is constructed to test the interrelationships among religious context of parenting, family processes, and delinquency. The results show that religious context of parenting had positive effects on parental relationship, parenting practices, and parent-child bonding. Through these intermediate mechanisms, religious context of parenting significantly reduced adolescents’ involvement in antisocial behavior. |
