This paper examines data collected in the screening phase of the College Life Study (CLS), a longitudinal study of college students funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which has as one of its initial goals to understand the antecedent and correlates of poly-drug use. Students attending freshman orientation a large mid-Atlantic public university (N = 3,401) were surveyed using a classroom-administered self-report instrument during the summer orientation prior to their first year of college. Excluding alcohol and tobacco, 40% of students used at least one illicit drug, and close to 15% used an illicit drug other than marijuana at least once before entry into college. Approximately 12% of students tried more than one illicit drug other than marijuana and 7% tried more than two. Because of the large sample size and the confidential nature in which the self-reported data was obtained, these estimates are likely to generalize to other large public universities. Patterns of multiple drug use will be discussed. Preventive interventions should be designed to mitigate the possible long-term legal, social, and health consequences of poly-drug use among college students. |
