Abstract:

In this paper I propose a re-reading of The American Science which attempts a more rounded presentation of its arguments, placing it within the context of Crick's evolving thinking about politics and political education in these years. This framework, it seems to me, provides a sharper understanding of the character of his critique of American political science. The notion that he was merely restating entrenched English-Whig prejudices has had the unfortunate consequence of removing from the collective memory of the discipline Crick's commitment to the idea that a core purpose of political analysis was to reflect on, and contribute to, the processes of civic education. In conclusion, I argue that both the strengths and weaknesses of Crick's writings on political science, generate some important questions for those contemplating the history of the discipline.
