Abstract:
|
An examination of Algernon Sidney's thought helps to reveal that the classical republican depiction of the stark distance between Machiavellian republicanism and liberalism is overdrawn, because Sidney is himself close both to Machiavelli, the alleged patron of classical republicanism, and to Locke, the advocate for liberal individualism. Thus, Sidney's thought suggests how Machiavelli's republicanism and Lockean liberalism might be compatible. |
