Abstract:

This paper is an enquiry into one strand of the stadial history articulated by several Scottish Enlightenment thinkers and their heirs amongst early nineteenth century political economists. It examines how they constructed and offered a history of sexual desire and endeavours to relate it to their larger theory of societal development.

Box 600 Wellington New Zealand pat.moloney@vuw.ac.nz A paper presented at the American Political Science Association Conference Boston MA 27 August -- 1 September 2002 2 Gordon Schochet's work on patriarchalism in seventeenth century political thought was one of a number of studies in the early 1970s that approached the political theory canon in a novel way. Rather than assuming a trans­historical
morals and practices of their own society. The variety of sexual behaviours and gender roles observed in non­European societies posed something of a classificatory and moral challenge to Europeans. Their stadial theory a natural history of the human species was the theoretical framework they employed to order that diversity and to relate it to their own world.
