Abstract:

The paper tests Putnam's thesis about the role of social capital in promoting political participation in Latin America. Data are drawn from the 1995-97 wave of the World Values Survey for eight Latin American countries. The paper concludes that social capital does encourage political participation in Latin America, but that education drives participation more than other variables.
