Abstract:
|
Teaching International Relations content using English as the language of instruction in a non-English environment can often be challenging for many educators. In such an international setting, classrooms are likely to have students possessing a wide range of English proficiency levels. Active learning techniques provide many solutions for many of the challenges faced by teachers in the international classroom. While lecture comprehension tends to favor the more fluent students, active learning can provide a higher quality learning experience for all, even those of lesser English proficiency. Moreover, the encouragement of all students to participate in a more communicative class environment provides many situations for limited proficiency students to produce and manipulate language to support a variety of goals and thereby help close any comprehension gaps between themselves and their more-fluent classmates. International politics courses are particularly well suited for active learning strategies. Comprehension of subjects like diplomacy and foreign policy is enhanced when students are participating in the learning process through techniques such as peer teaching, cooperative learning groups and simulations. |
