It is widely acknoledged that a key element of post-Cold War military transformation is a growth in the role and scope of private firms in support of deployed military operations. Despite this trend, the issue of military outsourcing has attracted little attention and policy debates have been dominated by myths and emotions. This paper analyses the antecedents, assumptions and concerns about military outsourcing using the United Kingdom as a case study. It draws a series of theoretical and empirical conclusions about the scope and limits of private sector involvement in support of military operations that are relevant to a range of states. |
