Abstract:
|
This paper presents evidence that the increase in FDI flows from Spain to LA in the 1990's has generated a reduction in bilateral conflict between the US and Spain. In fact, these investments have strengthened the relationship (generated an increase in cooperation) that helps to explain why Spain, along with the UK, proved to be the United States' closest European allies during the conflict with Iraq in 2003. |

| Can FDI Increase Peace as Trade Does? Solomon Polachek Carlos Seiglie and Jun Xiang 1. Introduction There is a large body of literature that deals with the question of whether trade promotes peace. Despite different methodologies the preponderance of the evidence shows that trade reduces interstate conflict though there is still some debate.1 The economic basis upon which these results rest is comparative advantage an approach developed by David Ricardo almost two hundred years ago. Comparative advantage induces nations |
