Abstract:

Aristotle’s exposition of the relationship between political and ethical life is epitomized by the phenomenon of friendship. For Aristotle, a well constituted state will be one that cultivates virtue in, and friendship between, its citizens. In light of this, commentators have tried to draw a connection between political friendships based on utility, and friendships based on virtue. Such a connection is facilitated by an assumption about Aristotle’s understanding of personal identity, and a corresponding (mis)use of the notion of goodwill. Rather than goodwill representing an all-encompassing concept, I argue that goodwill is experienced in a partial, circumstantial, and narrow manner. Rethinking the way that goodwill is experienced by friends allows us to circumvent a number of potential problems associated with Aristotle’s treatment of political friendship.
