Abstract:
|
How to deal with terrorism was the campaign issue of the 2004 presidential election. This paper examines the comparisons and differences between the Reagan and George W. Bush coalitions in their use of the politics of fear. Reagan was able to create a broad coalition using fear of communism. Demography also helped. George W. Bush has also used the politics of fear, but with less success. He won in 2004, but his victory was far from broad and the demography of the U.S. electorate has changed radically from the Reagan era. Thus, the politics of fear, while potent, is not comparable to the Cold War era. |
