Unformatted Document Text:  22 single mention of a she-ass (Eselin) and that 563c contains the Republic’s one and only mentionof asses. There is one non-sex-specific mention of asses in Beyond Good and Evil. In section 8Nietzsche observes, “There is a point in every philosophy when the philosopher’s ‘conviction’appears on the stage – or to use the language of an ancient Mystery: Adventavit asinus,Pulcher et fortissimus.”[The ass arrived, beautiful and most brave.] Nietzsche’s adoption of the language of the Mysteries reminds one of the nod toward Aeschylusin 237. Note too that he prefaces the examination of women in 232-239 by announcing that itwill be based on something like what he here calls “the philosopher’s ‘conviction’”; what hecalls conviction in section 8 he describes more extensively in 231 as “something unteachable, some granite of spiritual fatum, of predetermined decision and answer to predetermined selectedquestions” (231).

Nietzsche’s adoption of the language of the Mysteries reminds one of the nod toward Aeschylus
in 237. Note too that he prefaces the examination of women in 232-239 by announcing that it
will be based on something like what he here calls “the philosopher’s ‘conviction’”; what he
calls conviction in section 8 he describes more extensively in 231 as “something unteachable,
some granite of spiritual fatum, of predetermined decision and answer to predetermined selected
