Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: National identity is to some degree a fluid and manipulable concept, as it is based on perception rather than objective fact. Despite arguments that primordial traits prescribe ethnic and therefore national identity, this paper argues that the fact that the concept of the nation remains intangible allows for manipulation of nationalism and popular sentiment in this regard. Far right parties have recognized this opportunity and have had focused much energy on promoting nationalism as a response to identity threats resulting from the presence of immigrants in West European societies. This paper investigates the use of nationalism and ethnic distinction by radical right-wing parties to promote racism and anti-foreigner sentiment among their domestic populations. It focuses on the construction of an �us versus them� mentality and the portrayal of immigrants as outside of the national community. Both integration and assimilation are explored as a means of incorporating immigrants and overcoming the perceived threat.
