Abstract:
|
This paper explores the tensions between global economic integration and the incipient imperial mode of governance by analyzing the configurations of ?interests? articulated by states and transnational social forces. I will argue that the expectation once prevailing among critical theorists of International Political Economy that a new form of transnational hegemony, together with a multilateral system of global governance was being constructed as part of the neoliberal globalization project, floundered as a result of an inadequate consideration of the sources of the ?national interest?. I will then develop a critical theory of the constitution of national interests that allows for a better understanding of the role of states in shaping global spaces, and accounts for the limited dynamics of contestation of imperial governance. |
