Abstract:

This paper argues that insurance is a technology through which kidnap is rendered manageable by transforming it into an occupational hazard. While analysing Kidnap and Ransom Insurance as the risk-embracing instrument that emerges from such a problematisation, two forms of security result: a preventative one in the form of a security audit, and a reparational form as a complex ensemble of expert knowledge and financial support. The paper suggests that these two forms of security are grounded on a notion of risk as an instrument of governance rather than an organising principle of life. The ‘risk embracing’ approach is presented as an epistemologically-based micro-practice of security through which a liberal form of life is promoted and protected. Lessons from this approach for the field of security studies are offered in the conclusions.
