Abstract:
|
The purpose of the paper is to examine the phenomenon of anti-Americanism in Greece. In so doing, it is divided into six parts. The first part introduces the reader to some important distinctions necessary to avoid serious misunderstandings and misinterpretations stemming from the way in which certain concepts might be used. The second part presents the typology of anti-Americanism advanced by Keohane and Katzenstein against which the findings of this paper are examined. The third part identifies and discusses key elements in social and political psychology theories that assist one to understand how anti-American perceptions are coming into being and why they are expressed in the way they do. The fourth part introduces the reader to a general discussion about anti-Americanism in Greece and contrasts it to the phenomenon of Americanization in the country. The fifth part examines the underlying causes of the Greek perceptions and attitudes, while the sixth part investigates the immediate causes of the Greek political and societal attitudes towards the U.S. |
