Abstract:

In recent years there have been increasing calls for the European Union to take on a more active role in Israeli-Palestinian peace making efforts. One option for the European Union in taking a greater role would be to define itself as a balancer against the United States. A second option would be to pursue a bonding strategy of aligning with the United States to secure itself a seat at the table. The argument of this paper is that in this case, balancing and bonding are not alternative strategies and that if the European Union is to play a more influential role in the peace process it must strike a balance between balancing and bonding. |
