Abstract:

Research on civil war onset, duration, and outcome has revealed a number of factors that influence the dynamics of civil war. This paper explores how characteristics of a civil war affect the prospects for post-civil war democratization. In particular, we explore how the costs of civil war -- its destructiveness and its duration -- and the outcome -- whether it ends in a government victory, a rebel victory, or a negotiated settlement -- affect the prospects for the post-war regime evolving into a democratic polity. the theory we present is tested with data from Doyle and Sambanis (2000).
