Kosovar Identities ? Gendered Realities of Life?

Abstract:

This paper will address the link between manhood and nationhood in post conflict societies, focusing on that of post-2000 Kosova. Kosovars, like many ?traditionally? patriarchal societies, have constructed identities of the patriotic man and the exalted childbearing woman as icons of national survival. These designated identities often negate the realities of war-affected communities. The gendered places of man and woman in political reality are marred by the traumatic events of life. Within this framework, I have attempted to focus on those with ?alternative? identities or ?bonded? senses of self-esteem as a result of viewing themselves somewhat unable to live up to the iconic emblem. These being the gay and lesbian; single mothers; and sex workers. By thinking about the masculine micro cultures of nation building, especially the construction of over-sexed and under-sexed individuals (i.e. the soldier) and the promiscuous enemies within (i.e. the rape victim and the gay man), I can argue a reasonable exposure as to the connection between monoracial and heterosexual preserves and the need for this society to hold onto the traditional man.
